Specialist endodontist joins Newcastle Advanced Dentistry

We are delighted to welcome Dr Lucy Powrie to the team at Newcastle Advanced Dentistry, bringing additional expertise in endodontics (root canal treatment) to our practice.

Lucy has recently completed specialist training in Endodontics at King’s College London (MEndo) and is returning to Newcastle with her young family. We are thrilled to welcome her back to the North East and look forward to the contribution she will make to our team and the care we provide to our patients.

Specialist expertise in endodontics

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of problems affecting the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the roots of teeth. Root canal treatment can often help save a natural tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted.

Lucy developed a particular interest in endodontics early in her dental career. After graduating with honours from Cardiff University in 2015, she gained experience in a range of dental practice and hospital settings, including Newcastle, Essex, London and Edinburgh, before undertaking advanced specialist training at King’s College London.

Her additional postgraduate qualifications in medical education and health research methods reflect her wider commitment to professional development and evidence-based dentistry.

Through her advanced training, Lucy brings valuable experience in the management of complex endodontic problems, including cases where previous root canal treatment has not achieved the desired outcome.

Published research in endodontics

Lucy’s commitment to advancing endodontic care extends beyond clinical practice. In 2023, she co-authored a peer-reviewed research paper published in the journal Oral Surgery, examining the outcomes of apical surgery using a modern bioceramic root-end filling material. Read Lucy’s published research.

Apical surgery is a specialised procedure that can sometimes help save a tooth when conventional root canal treatment or retreatment is not suitable or has been unsuccessful. The research investigated the clinical outcomes of using TotalFill Root Repair Material putty during surgery, contributing to the evidence base that informs modern endodontic practice.

The study reported a tooth survival rate of 93% and a treatment success rate of 86% among the cases reviewed. These findings highlight the potential role of modern bioceramic materials in surgical endodontics, while recognising that outcomes depend on a range of factors, including case selection, anatomy and surgical technique. Read the published study.

Lucy’s involvement in published research reflects her interest in evidence-based dentistry and the continued development of techniques designed to help patients retain their natural teeth wherever possible.

Helping patients preserve their natural teeth

At Newcastle Advanced Dentistry, we understand the importance of preserving natural teeth wherever possible. Root canal treatment and endodontic re-treatment can play an important role in achieving this, particularly when a tooth has become infected, is causing persistent discomfort or has previously undergone unsuccessful treatment.

Lucy’s expertise will strengthen our ability to assess and manage these cases, providing patients and referring dentists with access to advanced endodontic care.

Every case is different, and treatment begins with a thorough assessment to establish the nature of the problem, discuss the available options and help patients make informed decisions about their dental health.

Our aim is always to provide clear advice, careful treatment planning and the highest standards of clinical care.

Supporting our referring dentists

We are also pleased to strengthen the endodontic services available to our referring colleagues across Newcastle and the wider North East.

We recognise the importance of working closely with referring dentists to manage challenging cases, communicate treatment findings and support continuity of care. Lucy’s appointment will further enhance the endodontic expertise available within our multidisciplinary team.

Where appropriate, we aim to help patients retain their natural teeth while enabling referring dentists to continue providing their ongoing general dental care.

Coming home to Newcastle

Alongside this exciting professional development, Lucy is returning to Newcastle with her young family. Having previously worked in the North East, she is looking forward to making the region home again.

We are delighted that she has chosen to join Newcastle Advanced Dentistry and look forward to introducing her to our patients and referring colleagues.

Please contact Newcastle Advanced Dentistry to find out more about our endodontic services or to discuss a referral for a patient requiring root canal treatment or endodontic re-treatment.

We warmly welcome Lucy to the team.
